August is here and now is the perfect time to escape the summer heat while exploring the rich cultural heritage of Taizhou city – located in East China's Jiangsu province.

Follow in the footsteps of famous figures and enjoy a refreshing and poetic summer getaway. Here's your guide to some must-see spots in this charming city.

Visit Qintong Ancient Town

Start your adventure in Qintong Ancient Town, often called the "pearl of the water town". This picturesque area is surrounded by shimmering waters and is known for its serene beauty. It's also the childhood home of the esteemed academician Li Deren, a leading figure in surveying and remote sensing for Earth observations who has received the highest national science and technology award.

Take a stroll through Li Deren's former residence, which radiates a tranquil charm with its traditional Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) architecture. The house, where he lived for 11 years, is a testament to his legacy. Nearby, you'll find a thousand-year-old camellia tree that Li Deren fondly recalled, which was blossoming abundantly in the year of his birth.

Stroll through Plum Garden

Next, head to Meiyuan Garden, which is dedicated to the legendary Peking opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961). This garden is a tribute to his artistic legacy, with lush greenery and water features that create a serene environment. As you wander through the garden, you'll encounter various pavilions and scenic spots that enhance the beauty of the surroundings.

The Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall displays numerous photographs and artifacts that celebrate his remarkable life and contributions to the arts. This garden is a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the life of this cultural icon.
