Students from Singapore's Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College West visited the Jinhua Paper-Cutting Museum in Zhejiang province on Sept 26 to immerse themselves in the traditional art.

Zhan Dongming, a master of Jinhua paper-cutting and a key figure in preserving this intangible cultural heritage, introduced the students to its rich history and cultural significance, with his live demonstration of creating window decorations leaving the students in awe of his skills.

"Paper-cutting is not just a folk art; it encapsulates history, customs, aesthetics, and cultural depth," said Zhou Guanzhi, the lead teacher. He noted that while Singaporean students often learn about Chinese culture through media, this exchange offered a valuable opportunity for direct engagement.

After the demonstration, students took part in a practical session, learning basic techniques and crafting their own fu (fortune) character cuttings to take back to Singapore as souvenirs.

ITE College West and Jinhua Technician College have maintained a regular exchange program since 2014, fostering deep connections and promoting Jinhua's cultural heritage internationally. Before visiting the museum, the students also explored traditional tie-dye and ocarina performances, gaining a broader appreciation of Jinhua's culture.
