Footprints of Zhuhai's striving development, from its booming industrial development to the thrilling 14th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, have been recorded in the top 10 news stories of 2022.

After rounds of online voting and comprehensive appraisals, the list was released by the Zhuhai Association of Journalists and Zhuhai Media Group under the guidance of the Publicity Department of the CPC Zhuhai Municipal Committee on Jan 9.

1. Firmly implementing the spirits of 20th CPC

The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) took place from Oct 16 to 22, 2022 in Beijing and Zhuhai has been focusing on the study and implementation of the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress since then. It was put forward that the city will accelerate the construction of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and strive to become a modernized and internationalized special economic zone in the new era of socialism.

2. Moving forward industrial development

Zhuhai will adhere to the principle of "Industry First," which was put forward at the Zhuhai Industrial Development Conference on April 24, 2022.

The city will give priority to the development of four leading industries: new-generation information technology (IT), new energy, integrated circuits (IC), and biomedicine and health. It will also give priority to the smart home appliances, equipment manufacturing, and fine chemicals industries.

Zhuhai aims to achieve an industrial output value of over 1 trillion yuan ($148 billion) by 2025. It has been accelerating the construction of citywide industry 5.0 space projects, and has finished 4.46 million sqm (11,102 acres) of them in 2022.

3. Supporting the construction of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin

Zhuhai has been offering continuous and solid support to sci-tech R&D, high-end manufacturing, brand industries like TCM, culture, tourism, conventions, and exhibitions, as well as modern finance industries in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin since 2022.

Hengqin is now home to over 5,000 Macao-funded enterprises, with over 700 newcomers in 2022. The number of newly registered Macao-funded enterprises in Zhuhai in 2022 reached over 1,000, bringing the city's total number to be over 8,000.

4. The 14th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition

The 14th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China), held in Zhuhai from Nov 8 to 13, 2022, attracted more than 740 domestic and overseas enterprises from 43 countries and regions to participate either online or on-site. Over 120 aircraft were displayed, while the indoor exhibition area covered 100,000 sqm (25 acres).

Cooperation agreements for 549 aircrafts, worth $39.8 billion, were signed during the 14th Airshow China, both setting record highs in the exhibition's history. The number of visitors was recorded at 215,000.

5. Xianghai Bridge begins operation

The 29.8-km (18.5-mile) Xianghai Bridge, containing a 20-km (12-mile) main line and 9.8-km (6.1-mile) feeder line, opened to traffic on Nov 6, 2022 helping to build Zhuhai's expressway network. Motorists from Xiangzhou can now reach Doumen in only 15 minutes.

6. The 2022 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Fair for Trade in Services

The three-day 2022 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Fair for Trade in Services, commenced on Dec 22, 2022 at the Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Center in Shizimen.

More than 400 enterprises and industrial elites in the Greater Bay Area and 17 representatives from domestic provinces and municipalities gathered for the event.

The fair showcases the latest outcomes achieved in the integrated development of trade in services in the Greater Bay Area and builds new platforms for the exchanges and cooperation in the new era.

7. Zhuhai's regulations to strictly control industrial land lot use

China's first local regulation focusing on strictly controlling industrial land lot use was implemented on June 1, 2022 in Zhuhai. It addresses problems in the preparation and operation of industrial land lots, such as low efficiency of land output and an imperfect exit mechanism, which have posed limitations on the city's industrial development.

8. The Chinese Documentary Film Festival

The inaugural Chinese Documentary Film Festival was held in Zhuhai from Dec 12 to 14, 2022, showcasing the integration of traditional Chinese culture and global culture by telling true Chinese stories.

Events like the opening and closing ceremonies, a series of recommended Chinese documentary films, and the collection and broadcast of short videos for the "Impression Zhuhai" program were included.

9. High-quality education development

Zhuhai Municipal People's Government released 10 Measures for the High-quality Development of Education in Zhuhai on July 6, 2022, noting that the city will solve the shortage of study places in public schools within two to three years.

The city will build more kindergartens, primary and middle schools to provide public education for an additional 210,000 students by the end of 2024.

10. Turning the prefabricated food industry into a calling card for rural vitalization

Guangdong's celebration of the 2022 Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival took place on Sept 23, 2022 in Lianzhou Town of Doumen District, presenting the latest outcomes of the province's rural reform and vitalization.

Zhuhai has been boosting the development of the prefabricated food industry with the expectation that the industry's annual output value will reach over 30 billion yuan ($4 billion) by 2025.
