Symposium Held at Tsinghua to Promote National Sci-tech Communication Brand-Building

A symposium on national sci-tech communication brand-building & the second session of the sci-tech communication salon were held at Tsinghua University in Beijing on September 15.

The symposium was attended by Chen Rui, deputy director of National Communication Center for Science and Technology affiliated to the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Hu Yu, Party chief of the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University, and other domestic experts, who discussed topics concerning brand-building in science and technology communication.

During his speech, Chen stressed the importance of empathy and underscored the principles of connection, communication, content, coordination and contribution in brand-building. He added that more efforts should be done to further consolidate consensuses on specific concepts, raise the sense of mission, absorb talented personnel into professional organizations, promote the formation of common identity and kinship, and highlight the leading role of social values in a drive to build a positive national image in science and technology.

Hu noted that the agents of science and technology communication should take into consideration the due roles played by government and society in the process and that relevant work shall be conducted in alignment with academic knowledge and popular lifestyles. He emphasized that science and technology communication should give priority to demonstrating a positive national image in the dissemination of scientific and technological development.

Ji Lianggang, deputy researcher with the Zhejiang Science Communication Center and former head of the Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum, said that brand-building should focus on theoretical research and practical guidance and strive to make a breakthrough in science and technology communication through the improvement of laws and policies, platform building, talent cultivation and the introduction of innovative concepts.

Ji Xiaohua, founder and CEO of Guokr, China's leading popular science website, said that scientists, product managers and communication workers should make joint efforts to provide the public with three-dimensional communication content in diverse forms.

Tong Qing'an, editor-in-chief of Beijing Sci-tech Report, urged leading media organizations to fully leverage their roles, accelerate national brand-building in science and technology communication, guide the positive development of public opinions and form a joint force in scientific and technological communication.

Li Xiaodong, founder of Fuxi Institution and director of Tsinghua University Center for Internet Governance, said their work should follow the latest developments in scientific and technological industries and relevant policies, hold frontier exhibitions capable of making the stories of Chinese scientists better known, host high-level forums with global vision and views, produce in-depth content, and come up with professional reports conducive to promoting industrial cooperation and development.

Co-hosted by National Communication Center for Science and Technology and Tsinghua University's School of Journalism and Communication, the sci-tech communication salon invites experts and leading figures involved in the theoretical and practical studies of science and technology communication from government departments, media organizations, universities and enterprises during each session to conduct in-depth discussions over selective topics in connection with the dissemination of popular science and scientific culture, the integration between sci-tech communication services and relevant business, frontier theories of science and technology communication and relevant innovative businesses.
