The second phase will add 2,500 metric tons of cobalt production capacity per year, with the cobalt sulfate solution to be used for lithium battery ternary precursor production.
With the surge of the global new energy industry, the consumption of cobalt in the battery sector will continue to increase, as will the consumption proportion.
The cobalt production line expansion project will improve the comprehensive production capacity of cobalt to meet the needs of social development and promote the rapid advancement of the new energy industry.
As a key construction project of Jinchuan Group in 2018, the project was composed of two phases, with each having a cobalt production capacity of 2,500 metric tons. The first phase was designed to expand the original plant of the cobalt production area by an annual capacity of 100,000 metric tons. Its trial production and commissioning were completed in December 2018.
The second phase of the project started construction in May 2021 and has completed plant construction and main equipment installation.
After the overall completion of the project, Jinchuan Group’s annual cobalt production capacity will reach 18,000 metric tons, and the self-sufficiency rate of cobalt raw materials required for battery materials such as cobaltosic oxide and nickel-cobalt-manganese ternary precursors will reach 100 percent.

This move is expected to lay a solid foundation for Jinchuan Group to develop cobalt resources and to realize its plans in the cobalt and power battery material industries during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).
Lanzhou Jinchuan Advanced Materials Technology Co Ltd was established in 2004 in Lanzhou, Gansu province. It mainly produces cobalt-related lithium-ion battery materials used in 3C portable electronic products and new energy vehicles. It also conducts research and development and production of metal cobalt and other products for aerospace alloys.
The company, a national high-tech enterprise, is the most important upstream enterprise in the development and application of new energy battery materials in China.
With R&D and production bases in Lanzhou and Jinchang in Gansu province, and Nantong in Jiangsu province, it has set up research and development centers, innovation platforms at national and provincial levels, and established joint laboratories and talent training bases with universities.
In addition, the company has a number of professional laboratories with material preparation and performance evaluation capacities, as well as pilot and industrialized platforms for engineering research and industrial incubation.
