Pocket parks, which typically cover an area of 400 to 10,000 square meters, are springing up in Chinese cities.

A number of exquisite pocket parks with perfect facilities opened to the public in Pudong New Area of East China's Shanghai in late December last year, which not only improved the quality of the urban landscape, but also provided residents with a natural garden for strolling, viewing and relaxing.

They are small open green spaces built along urban roads, commercial blocks or residential areas that feature lawns, children's playgrounds, fitness greenways, squares and other areas for leisure activities, social gatherings, walking, entertainment and cultural displays.

In the past 10 years, Pudong New Area in Shanghai has made efforts to expand green spaces and open up new opportunities for tourism and leisure in order to transform itself into a "park city" and create a pleasant urban environment for locals.

According to Pudong's development goals, the area plans to build more than 50 boutique pocket parks during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, and will advance its "park city" construction, aiming to improve urban living environments, and enhance people's daily lives.

In 2022, Pudong built a total of 25 pocket parks across its 13 towns, including 17 transformed from existing green spaces and marginal, abandoned and idle land. Each park has its own characteristics, and can meet the basic daily needs of local residents.
