Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area, located in Huangshan city, Anhui province, was recently selected as one of the top 20 examples of forest landscape ecosystem restoration in the Asia Pacific region; one of more than 150 cases selected from various regions in the world. It was the only area selected in China.
Its selection was confirmed by congratulatory letters from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Huangshan has made solid strides in improving its ecosystem management mechanism, promoting green projects, and implementing protective measures, and has worked on research related to the protection and restoration of forest landscape ecosystems.
Huangshan released nearly 100 ecological management regulations, such as real name registration for campers.
Huangshan implemented and completed the first mountain forest biodiversity conservation GEF full increment project in Anhui province. The forest coverage rate of the scenic area has now reached as high as 98.29 percent.
Moreover, Huangshan launched the first action plan for biodiversity conservation in China's scenic spots and the first provincial standard for "protection of old and valuable trees". The scenic area has also made another remarkable achievement – 43 consecutive years without a forest fire.
To better protect the scenic area, more than 10 background surveys on biodiversity resources were conducted. Automatic monitoring stations that can monitor more than 70 ecological indicators were also established in the area.
