The ink stones produced in Shexian county, known as Huizhou in the Song Dynasty (1644-1911), are also the subject of one of China's Four Treasures of Study. They appeared as early as the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) and there are more than 100 varieties.

The ink stone making process is composed of stone selections, designs, shaping, carving, grinding, packaging and other procedures. These are a supreme test of the artisans' aesthetic judgment and skills in the face of the often abrupt alteration in the colors and textures of the stones.

With their wide range of themes, novel compositions and beautiful shapes, the ink stones are highly collectible. The production of the Huizhou ink stone was included in the first national list of intangible cultural heritage items in 2006.
