Romance wed to technology on rebuilt Sanjiao Island
Zhuhai's Sanjiao Island in the Wanshan Archipelago will open by 2022 as a romantic destination for waterborne leisure tourism that includes sailing and angling competitions, relaxing getaways, water sports, themed activities, and science promotions.
Jiuzhou Holdings Group, the developer, plans a cliff hotel on the northwest side that will have a dominant view of two natural fresh-water lakes. The heart-shaped lake will have a wedding hall. An artistic design of the facilities will promote low-carbon, energy-saving, and environmental-protection practices.
Island recreational facilities include a glass-bottom sightseeing stand, hiking trails, terrace square, "infinite" pool, Milky Way footpaths, and "time-travel corridor" equipped with LED screens, light strips, and stainless-steel mirrors.

A seawater desalination plant will be completed in February. It will utilize wind power to produce drinking water for 5,000, addressing a shortage of fresh water during travel peaks and dry seasons. Concentrated seawater generated by the plant will be used to create an artificial Dead Sea, provide sea salt healthcare, and promote water conservation.
In addition, multiple advanced technologies will be used to collect rainwater, recycle water, generate offshore wind power, and treat nontoxic garbage and sewage.
The .87-sq-km (215-acre) Sanjiao Island has three peaks which, seen from a distance, appear to form a triangle; hence the name san (three) jiao (angles). It is 8.7 nautical miles and 20 minutes by ferry from Jiuzhou Port in Jida, 6.6 NM due east of Macao International Airport, 8.5 NM from Hong Kong, and 21.6 NM from Shenzhen.
China's first uninhabited island for "public service + tourism" development and ecological restoration, the project also focuses on marine agricultural sci-tech exhibitions; and brown field, forest, and beach restoration.
Restoration of the beach and 800 m (875 yd) of shoreline has been completed. A total of 3,300 m (3,609 yd) of the quarry-ravaged coast will be restored by December 2021.
In addition to 4G signal coverage, the island is provided with electricity and water. It will come into trial operation with the opening of partial tourism projects and ferry routes from Jiuzhou Port in July, according to Su Qinglong, chairman of Jiuzhou Holdings Blue Marine Tourism Development.
