Sanjiao Island on track to become tourism paradise
Sanjiao Island of Zhuhai's Wanshan Archipelago is optimizing design proposals for eight theme parks and other sports and leisure facilities that will constitute the first "public service + tourism" uninhabited island destination in China.
The 96-sq-km (237-acre) island has been electrified and provided with 4G signals. Its Logistics Terminal project is now underway for beach restoration and seawater desalination. Other works include lake improvement, ecological restoration infrastructure, ecological civilization education, beach renewal, marine ecosystem construction, an island monitoring center, and construction of an environmental IoT project.
Sanjiao Island
Costing 2.2 billion yuan ($318 million), the island project came under construction in 2017 and is to be completed by 2022.
Architectural concepts have been released for Floating Central Town, Sparkling Bay, Garden in the Air, Eden Valley, Smart Park, Moon Lake, Dream Beach, and Tropical Utopia, according to a project head.
Ecological restoration of the quarry-devastated island will be conducted before any further development, and the preliminary design for this stage has also been published with details still to be polished.
Island environs
Created will be the country's first demonstration island integrating ecological restoration, monitoring, and leisure. Full play is to be given to seaside attractions "held like jewels in the clasps" of nearby mountains.
Sanjiao Island is in the northwestern part of the Wanshan Archipelago, about 8.7 nautical miles and 20 minutes by ferry from Jiuzhou Port in Jida. It is 6.6 and 8.5 nautical miles from Macao and Hong Kong, and 21.6 nautical miles from Shenzhen -- at the geometric center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The project is being carried by Zhuhai Jiuzhou Holdings Blue Marine Tourism Development, a subsidiary of Zhuhai Jiuzhou Holdings Group to which the usage right of the island was transferred through a listed transaction in 2017.
