The Hengqin Branch of Zhuhai People's Hospital opened on Dec 5, providing local Grade-III Class-A medical services for residents and Macao people in Hengqin New Area.

Nearly 30 chief and deputy chief physicians from Zhuhai People's Hospital's 13 departments are providing free treatment in Hengqin through Dec 10. Fees for registration, basic drugs, examinations, and tests are all exempted.

Zhuhai People's Hospital is sending experts and noted doctors each week to the Hengqin Branch to provide treatment or guidance, according to hospital president Lu Ligong.

Covering 25,000 sq m (6 acres), the facility at 118 Baoxing Road is 2.5 km (1.6 miles) from Hengqin Checkpoint. The first phase, with floorage of 11,000 sq m (2.7 acres), has 100 ward beds. Units are reserved for emergency, internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, gynecology, ultrasound, clinical laboratory, imaging, and anesthesiology.

Next, the Hengqin Branch will augment itself as an internet hospital and build an artificial intelligence life research institute.

The facility will also enhance cooperation with other high-quality medical institutions, advance local medical institutional and systematic reform and innovation, and explore the use of Macao medical treatment coupons, said Li Weihui, deputy Party secretary of Hengqin New Area.

The plaque for Zhuhai People's Hospital Medical Treatment Group was unveiled the same day, a concrete move following Zhuhai's designation in July as one of 118 domestic pilot cities of urban medical consortium construction by the National Health Commission and National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
