Founded in 1976, the Shandong Provincial Museum of Geology is the only provincial natural science museum in Shandong. It is focused on popularizing geoscience knowledge, showcasing achievements in geoscience research, and promoting information about China's land and resources.

Opened in April 2017, the new museum is focused on the collection and management of physical specimens, geological data and mineral treasures. It is also an important platform for the popularization of geological science and technology as well as the conduct of geological and mineral research.
