The guests admire relics pertaining to the worship of the sun at Tiantai Mountain, the cradle of Rizhao's ancient Dongyi civilization, which existed in the area from the Neolithic Period to around the 8th century BC. Tiantai Mountain is also known as the "ancient country of the sun", where people in ancient times gathered to worship the god of the sun. The mountain is home to the ruins of the Temple of Xihe, the goddess of the sun and moon, relics of the tribe of Xihe, the mausoleum of Dayi, a divine stone of the sun and astrological instrument used for measuring the sky. Nowadays, the Rizhao government plans to tap into these abundant cultural resources and invest heavily in turning Rizhao into a major tourist destination. [Photo/ iqilu.com]

The event offers an intriguing window into the way the sun bears on ancient belief. Meanwhile it carries implications of how people in modern times should respect and protect the natural resources we used to take for granted.
