"Eighty-five high-speed trains carrying tens of thousands of passengers arrive at and depart from the platform every day during the Spring Festival travel season," said Zhang Jin, a passenger steward at the No 20 platform of the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.

The platform looks the same as the others in China with its 500 meters of length and 12 meters of width, but its special design allows 85 trains to stop at the platform day in and day out.

Zhang said that the platform handles 76 percent of the railway station's passenger flow and the shortest interval between two trains is only nine minutes.

The huge traffic and high departure frequency put great pressure on the passenger stewards.
