Hongqiao issues its first new work permits for foreigners

(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2017-02-28

The Shanghai Hongqiao Central Business District (CBD) issued its first new work permit for foreign employees on Feb 22. The new work permit, a synthesis of two previous types of work permits, had been eligible for applicants in Shanghai since Nov 1, 2016.

The double-track work permit for overseas employees in China will be gradually streamlined into one system under reforms initiated by the State Council.

Kang Kisik, general manager of Taixiong International Freight Agency (Shanghai) Company, becomes the first foreigner in Hongqiao to receive the new work permit card.

According to the "points-based" grading system introduced by Chinese government that categories foreigners working in Chinese companies and institutions into three levels by management, Kang Kisik is included in Class B, which refers to general professors.

Class A include top talents, and C those on short-term jobs.

As within one of the ten trial cities around China, Hongqiao has received consultants for 155 times since last November.

It is confirmed that by April 1, 2017 the new system for foreigner work permits in China will be collectively put into practice throughout China.

Two previous types of work permits will not be issued any longer by that time but those already issued will be still valid as long as they are not expired. Foreigners can also upgrade their old work permits into new ones at Hongqiao Enterprise Service Center.
