Shanghai Hongqiao Central Business District (CBD) carried out a flood and typhoon prevention emergency exercise at a construction site on June 2, to better enhance the district's capacity to respond to disasters. 

Officials from Hongqiao CBD’s administrative committee and principals of some 30 construction and supervision companies in the district, took part in the emergency exercise. Jiang Xiaolong, deputy director of the administrative committee delivered the exercises key address.

Emergencies were simulated on the day, including a strong typhoon and heavy rainfall, which could potentially flood the basement and damage the machine room. 

The exercisers initiated the flood and typhoon prevention emergency response plan by reinforcing worker accommodation, getting workers to safety, blocking and draining the basement’s water with sandbags and pumps, treating and curing the wounded and asking for help from the nearby community departments.

Jiang hailed the exercises a success and stressed that the weather could become more unpredictable because of the El Nino phenomenon, and so this type of preparation is very important.

Jiang said that companies in charge of constructions should prepare in advance for such situation and be aware of the hidden dangers of extreme weather to ensure maximum safety on such sites.
