As a global energy and petrochemicals enterprise, the Royal Dutch Shell Group, commonly known as Shell, launched its Shanghai commercial center in the HUB (Hongqiao Tiandi) in Shanghai Hongqiao Central Business District on July 8, 2015.

Shell's story in China can date back to more than a century ago. Royal Dutch Shell Group is an Anglo-Dutch multinational oil and gas company headquartered in the Netherlands and incorporated in the United Kingdom. Created by the merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum and UK-based Shell Transport & Trading, it is the seventh largest company in the world as of 2016, in terms of revenue, and one of the six oil and gas "supermajors".

Shell is also one of the world's most valuable companies. As of January 2013, it is the largest shareholder in Capital Research Global Investors with 9.85 percent ahead of BlackRock in second with 6.89 percent. Shell also topped the 2013 Fortune Global 500 list of the world's largest companies. Royal Dutch Shell’s revenue was equal to 84 percent of the Netherlands' $555.8 billion GDP at the time. As of February 2016, Shell is the world's second largest oil company.

Shell was vertically integrated and is active in every area of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, refining, distribution and marketing, petrochemicals, power generation and trading. It has minor renewable energy activities in the form of biofuels and wind. The company has operations in more than 90 countries, produces around 3.1 million barrels of oil per day and has 44,000 service stations worldwide. Shell Oil Company, its subsidiary in the United States, is one of its largest businesses.

It is widely-known that energy is vital to our daily lives. It helps us produce food, fuel transport and power communication channels across the world. Over the coming decades, more people will gain access to energy and enjoy higher standards of living. But these developments could place greater pressure on our world’s resources, such as energy, fresh water and food. At the same time, climate change remains a serious concern.

At Shell, the company is using human ingenuity, innovation and technology to explore new energy, aiming to limit non-renewable energy’s impact on the environment.
