Maoming has achieved a milestone in grain production, maintaining an annual output of over 1.5 million metric tons for five consecutive years. Since 2019, Maoming has consistently ranked first among Guangdong's cities in grain production four times and has received an "excellent" rating in the provincial food security assessment for four consecutive years.
In 2024, Maoming's spring harvest covered an area of 24,566.7 hectares, yielding 113,800 tons of grain, with an average yield per hectare increasing by 19.5 kilograms compared to the previous year. The summer harvest saw a 1.2 percent increase in the grain planting area, reaching 107,486.7 hectares, and an estimated yield of 673,100 tons, a 1.25 percent year-on-year increase. Notably, the sweet potato planting area expanded by 19 percent, covering 4,500 hectares.
The autumn grain production is progressing smoothly, with a late-season planting area of 121,000 hectares, a 0.52 percent increase. If weather conditions remain favorable, the late-season yield is expected to reach 757,200 tons, a 0.51 percent year-on-year increase.
Maoming's total grain production for the year is projected to exceed 1.5 million tons again, with an estimated total planting area of 253,046.7 hectares. This includes 3,093.3 hectares of soybeans and 46,833.3 hectares of oil crops, contributing to an anticipated annual grain output of 1.54 million tons.
