The Guangdong golden pomfret brand promotion event was held in Chengdu, Sichuan province on Aug 27. The tilapia products from Maoming, which is located 1,600 kilometers away, brought the fresh and sweet taste of Guangdong to Sichuan citizens.

Maoming, located on the coast of South China Sea with developed rivers and a tropical monsoon climate, has unique natural conditions for tilapia farming.

With scientific breeding by seedling breeding companies and strict control by agricultural departments, Maoming has nurtured a tilapia industry with unique regional characteristics.

Maoming has over 125 tilapia farms and over 30 tilapia seedling breeding farms.

In 2022, the tilapia farming area in Maoming exceeded 260,000 mu (17,333 hectares ), with a production of over 300,000 metric tons, accounting for about one-third of the total tilapia farming production in the province, one-eighth of the national total, and one-twelfth of the global total. The comprehensive output value of the industry reached 9.1 billion yuan ($1.3 billion).

Taking advantage of tilapia farming, Maoming seized the opportunity in the  pre-made food market and introduced prefabricated dishes made with tilapia.

In the "2022 China Regional Agricultural Industry Brand Influence" list released in January 2023, Maoming's tilapia ranked seventh.
