In recent years, Maoming has vigorously developed its coastal economy. In 2021, Maoming's gross marine product is expected to reach 63.7 billion yuan ($10 billion), a year-on-year increase of 9.9 percent.
Maoming has developed its port chemical industry. The added value of the petrochemical industry accounts for about 73 percent of Maoming's above-designated size industries. At present, there are more than 700 petrochemical enterprises in the city.
Maoming's 300,000-metric-ton crude oil terminal and 100,000-ton refined oil terminal are rapidly advancing. The construction of the 3×50,000-ton chemical terminal, the Changli petrochemical terminal, the liquid bulk terminal, the 300,000-ton channel, and the 50,000-ton inbound channel has started.
In 2021, Maoming's output of aquatic products was 933,000 tons, including 601,200 tons of marine products and 331,800 tons of freshwater products. The city has promoted the transformation of marine fishing vessels, with 23 fishing vessels upgraded last year.
The city has also promoted the construction of the white shrimp modern industrial park in Dianbai district, accelerated the development of shrimp industrialized recirculating aquaculture systems, and completed construction of 5,000 cubic meters of shrimp industrialized recirculating aquaculture.
The Maoming government also signed industry-university research cooperation agreements with South China Agricultural University, Guangdong Ocean University, as well as the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
