Founded in May 1955 as a subsidiary of Sinopec, or China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, Sinopec Maoming Petrochemical Company is welcoming its 65th anniversary this year.

After years of development, said Yin Zhaolin, general manager of Sinopec Maoming, the company has become one of the largest oil refining and chemical integration enterprises in China. It has processed 443 million metric tons of crude oil and produced more than 17.9 million tons of ethylene over the past 65 years.

The company's development has consistently been based on the needs of local economic development and people's lives.

Sinopec Maoming mainly focused on the processing of shale oil when established.

In April 1963, the company put into use its first atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit for crude oil with a designed capacity of 1 million tons per year. It became the nation's first enterprise with a crude oil processing capacity of over 10 million tons per year in 1998.

In September 1996, its first ethylene project was put into production, and it built up China's first ethylene production base with an annual ethylene production capacity of more than 1 million tons in 2006.

Sinopec Maoming has laid great emphasis on scientific development. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), it has developed 44 new products. The number and output of new products ranked first among all the refinery enterprises of Sinopec.

Green development is also a priority of the company. It has invested more than 3 billion yuan ($423.41 million) to improve oil quality since the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), as well as hundreds of millions of yuan in strengthening the construction of environmental protection facilities and the treatment of exhaust gas, liquid waste, and waste residue every year.

The company has been rated as an advanced environmental protection unit by Sinopec for five consecutive years, and was awarded the "Green Enterprise of Sinopec" title in January 2019.

In addition, Sinopec Maoming makes earnest efforts to promote public good and help lift impoverished villages out of poverty.

Since 2008, the company and its employees have donated a total of 26.11 million yuan to help Guangdong's poverty alleviation efforts and COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control efforts.

Nearly 10 million yuan has been invested by the company in recent years to help lift Wozai village in Maoming's Dianbai district, Mudeng village in Maoming Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, and Guzhang village in Maonan district out of poverty.

In the face of the COVID-19 epidemic, Sinopec Maoming started the production of medical polypropylene to provide raw materials for the production of anti-epidemic supplies, helping 30 relevant enterprises resume their work.
