Fengze district was approved by the State Council in August 1997 as one of the three districts divided from the original Licheng district. It is the core area of Quanzhou central city.
Fengze district covers 129.25 square kilometers and has eight subdistricts and 83 communities under its jurisdiction. It has a permanent resident population of 734,000.
Fengze district has all the factors for high-quality economic development. It has six colleges and universities including Huaqiao University, a national science and technology business incubator. At present, the total number of all kinds of talents is close to 200,000, accounting for 27.25 percent of the district's permanent population.
The district is also the financial center of Quanzhou with 90 percent of municipal bank headquarters and 85 percent of financial institutions located in the area.
In 2023, the region's GDP surpassed 90 billion yuan ($12.4 billion), up 6 percent year-on-year.
