Quanzhou, a city in East China’s Fujian province, is pushing ahead with its target of building more than 3,000 5G base stations by the end of the first quarter of 2020, according to local officials.

They said that at present, the construction is progressing smoothly and that as of now, there is demand to build a total of 4,428 base stations, of which 3,471 have been surveyed and designed, 751 are under reconstruction and 585 5G macro base stations have been built.

Last year, the city issued a three-year plan, which proposed that by 2021 the city will build more than 20,000 5G base stations.

The plan, which is called "Quanzhou Work Plan for Promoting 5G Construction", was released in November last year. It specifies work in four areas: network planning and deployment, technical implementation specifications, open sharing of resources and resource element guarantees.

In December last year, Quanzhou was selected as one of the first cities in China to roll out commercial 5G.

It also held two 5G industry supply and demand matchmaking conferences last year and industry applications such as 5G smart manufacturing industrial parks, 5G telemedicine and unmanned 5G driving have settled in the city.

In addition, the city is also actively promoting the development of the 5G industry and its applications. On Sept 29 last year, a 5G industry development alliance was established and the number of the first batch of member companies of the alliance exceeded 110.
