Khalid El Fataoui, an Honorary Citizen of Ningbo and president of the Morocco-China Association for Cultural and Economic Promotion, enjoys a strong connection with Ningbo that has grown steadily over the course of two decades.

His first visit left him with a deep impression: the grey‑brick alleys reminded him of Marrakech's ancient medina, while the vibrant skyline along the Sanjiangkou mirrored both cities' forward-facing vision. But what touched him most was the warmth of Ningbo's people — hospitality that felt as familiar as Morocco's own traditions.

Since the early 2000s, as Ningbo's private enterprises began exploring opportunities in Morocco, Fataoui became a trusted partner. He helped companies understand local regulations, accompanied them through administrative procedures, and mediated commercial disputes. Watching Ningbo entrepreneurs work tirelessly and ultimately succeed convinced him that cooperation between cities is built not only on agreements but on personal trust.

His efforts contributed to the signing of the formal partnership agreement between Ningbo and Marrakech in 2007, which became a model for China-Morocco urban exchange.

Believing strongly in "people‑to‑people diplomacy", he encouraged more than 40 Moroccan students to study at Ningbo University, telling them that understanding grows through shared experiences. Today, these students describe Ningbo as a warm and welcoming second home.

Fataoui continues to promote cooperation in trade, education, and culture. With Morocco set to co‑host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, he sees new opportunities for collaboration in infrastructure, digital economy, and smart‑city development — areas where Ningbo excels.

Looking ahead, he dreams of creating a Marrakech village in Ningbo and establishing a Ningbo investors' office in Marrakech.
