Annual dinner brings comfort to bereaved elderly in Ningbo
In Ningbo, a heartfelt annual reunion dinner has brought joy and comfort to elderly parents who have lost their only children, thanks to the dedicated efforts of local philanthropist Wu Xueyong and a community service organization.
Since 2016, Wu, a businessman, has been hosting this special dinner for bereaved elderly residents in the city's Baihe subdistrict.
Inspired by the plight of these parents, Wu pledged, "I'll be like a son to you." This heartfelt commitment has been a source of solace for many, transforming hesitant participants into close-knit friends who share laughter and companionship.
The initiative began when Wu learned about the "Little Cotton Jacket" Community Service Organization, Ningbo's first non-profit organization focusing on helping families who lost their only children.
Beyond the reunion dinner, the group provides counseling, home care and end-of-life support to over 100 elderly residents – the oldest clocking in at 92 years of old.
With the support of local businesses, Wu has turned this annual dinner into a broader celebration. Along with the meal, seniors receive gifts and participate in outings to museums and parks.
"At first, some were reluctant to join," Wu recalled, "but now they are truly enjoying themselves."
His advocacy for eldercare has also extended to the public sphere. As a political advisor of Yinzhou district, Wu submitted a proposal urging government action to address the unique challenges faced by grieving parents.
"They need emotional support more than material help," he added.
For many of the attendees, all the care and connection mean the world to them.
"I don't know how I would have coped without their help. Wu has been a constant support, always remembering us and bringing joy into our lives," said a senior surnamed Zhao, who lost her husband recently.
"When my husband was in his final days, the volunteers stood by me every step of the way," she added.
