The annual wine fair took place in the Shaoxing Yellow Rice Wine Town in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, amid the sounds of drums and vibrant dragon and lion dances on Sept 22.

This traditional folk activity focuses on the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, combining cultural experiences, gourmet tastings, and interactive entertainment.

Worship rituals were the highlight of the event, with participants offering wine and performing ritual bows, praying for favorable weather and abundant wine production in the coming year.

The event also featured immersive theatrical experiences, band performances, and a spectacular light show, drawing numerous villagers and tourists to join in the festivities.

The tradition of holding wine fairs has a long history in Dongpu town, Yuecheng district, the birthplace of Shaoxing yellow rice wine. Records also show that Dongpu held a three-day wine fair during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In 2012, it was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage item of Shaoxing.

Wang Jinjin, a practitioner of Shaoxing yellow rice wine brewing techniques, explained that through local folk activities such as opera performances and dragon boat races, the wine fair showcased the vibrant traditions of the region.
