Dongcheng town in Linhai, a county-level city in Taizhou, East China's Zhejiang province is a national manufacturing hub for colored lamps.

The town is capable of producing 70 billion lamp beads – more than half of the global market share – every year.

In the first half of this year, the output value of the colored lamp sector in Dongcheng hit 850 million yuan ($130.77 million), up 27.4 percent year-on-year.

There are currently more than 1,400 companies in Dongcheng's colored lamp sector, including 33 above designated size, that have a combined annual output value of about 4 billion yuan.

Among them is Zhejiang Changshuo Lighting Co Ltd, which has more than 5,000 kinds of products, 90 percent of which are exported to Europe, America, Japan and other places. The company has an annual output value of nearly 200 million yuan.

Continuous investment in innovation has been the main factor behind the company's growth. According to He Fangkai, a spokesman at Changshuo, the company invests about 2 million yuan into product development every year.

Linhai has also rolled out a string of incentives to spur innovation among local enterprises. Those included in the "Eyas Program" launched by the city stand to receive between 100,000 and 200,000 yuan should they make technological breakthroughs.

The lamp industry has also emerged as a significant approach in the promotion of common prosperity.

The workshops producing these lamps have created jobs for 60 percent of the town's surplus labor force, thus helping 800 families increase their annual incomes by 22,000 yuan.
