Despite having to often work overtime during the weekdays, Cai Yuwei has never failed to wake up before everyone else in the family on the weekends.

After having a quiet breakfast alone, he leaves the house before 7 am to head to the community health service center in Chashan street, Ouhai district to take part in the anti-epidemic work being carried out in the community.

"As long as there is a need, I will be there," said the 38-year-old, who is a delegate to the 15th Communist Party of China (CPC) Zhejiang Provincial Congress and deputy chief physician of the third department of clinical tuberculosis in the Nanbaixiang Hospital of Wenzhou Central Hospital.

Cai, who was the first to diagnose a patient with COVID-19 in Zhejiang, has been devoting much of his time and efforts to anti-epidemic tasks since the outbreak started in 2020.

On the morning of January 17, 2020, Cai received a call informing him of the immediate need for an isolation ward to treat patients. Without hesitation, he abandoned his breakfast and rushed to the hospital.

During the height of the pandemic in China, Cai played a pivotal role in coordinating the duties of medical staff and solving challenges that constantly presented themselves.

Despite his hectic schedule, Cai would spend some time after his shift chatting with patients and cheering them on. He even volunteered to work in the isolation ward for 30 consecutive days.

For his selfless contributions to the fight against COVID-19, Cai was given several awards, which he later donated to the Wenzhou Charity Federation.
