Root carvings from Kaihua, a county in Quzhou, Zhejiang province, made their debut at the 76th Venice Film Festival on Aug 29, according to local media reports.

Root carving in Kaihua enjoys a long history which can be traced back to the Tang (618-907) and Song dynasties (960-1279), said Lu Xiaguang, director of Kaihua county, at a promotional activity for the most beautiful shooting location in China during the festival.

Lu said that the ancient art has evolved, with more exquisite handicraft skills and innovations, while also embellishing the urban landscape.

Xu Guqing, a renowned root carving master at home and abroad, was invited to introduce root carving art to attendees.

Francesco Lannone and his wife Serena Tellini, Italian lighting designers of the root carving museum in Kaihua, also made an appearance at the event.

They said in an interview that the beautiful place is their ideal home and Kaihua's root carving features high craft level and is a pure natural art.

During the activity, Roberto Stabile, director of the international department of Italian Film Audiovisual and Multimedia Industries Association, awarded Kaihua the certificate of most beautiful shooting location for the Venice Film Festival.

In addition to root carving, Lu welcomed more visitors to Kaihua to enjoy its beautiful scenery, various delicacies and different local customs.
