Pujiang pioneers the sorting of rural waste

ezhejiang.gov.cn| Updated: August 27, 2018 L M S

Every household in Pujiang county now has two waste bins placed at their front door, green for waste that "will rot" and grey for waste that "will not rot". Random checks are carried out by villagers to make sure not a single piece of garbage has been placed in the wrong bin.

Instead of printing "recyclable" and "non-recyclable" on the waste bins, Pujiang county opted for simpler labeling – "will rot" and "will not rot" - which is easier for local villagers to understand.

This was not all that they did. A second classification is then carried out at a garbage station to divide the waste that "will not rot" into two further categories – that which can be sold to "make money" and that which "cannot make money".

This kind of sorting method was first piloted in Zhenjiawu town of Pujiang county in September 2014, and has now been applied to all 409 villages in the county.

The sorting of garbage even represents a family's reputation in the rural villages, as a "red list" and "black list" system has been founded to record the random checks that are conducted.

As time passes, the environment of Pujiang has largely improved, together with the level of happiness of local villagers. Pujiang is now famous for its beautiful landscape and has become a perfect spot to relax and go sightseeing
