Spanish mayor to spread Wenzhou culture
Àlex Pastor López, mayor of Badalona, a municipality to the northeast of Barcelona in Spain, was appointed as a cultural communication officer of Wenzhou, Zhejiang province on Aug 11.
The appointment was taken up by Pastor at the opening ceremony of a dragon boat port in the city. He said he is eager to learn more about Wenzhou and spread Wenzhou culture in Spain.
"I know Wenzhou is an appealing city and we get along well with its people in Badalona. I look forward to visiting the city in the near future," said the mayor.
The letter of appointment was given by Wenzhou's demonstration base for overseas promotion, a privately funded non-profit organization which was set up on April 26 this year.
The base, which focuses on overseas communications and cultural exchanges, has a bilingual all-media platform where Chinese stories and news are published for foreigners and overseas Chinese people. In addition, the base aims to build 25 liaison offices in other countries, and recruit 100 communication officers and 500 foreign volunteers, to help spread Wenzhou stories worldwide.
Wenzhou is the hometown of over 688,900 overseas Chinese in 131 countries. In Spain, there are around 60,000 Chinese people from the East China city, with most of them working in the catering and trade industries.
