Weifang in East China's Shandong province has been honored as the Culture City of East Asia for 2024, becoming the 14th city in China to receive this title.
This designation is part of a strategic initiative jointly implemented by China, Japan and the Republic of Korea to enhance cultural exchanges and cooperation in areas such as culture, art, and tourism, aiming to foster mutual understanding and respect among cultures.
The selection process, inspired by the European Capitals of Culture model, involves nominating candidate cities from each country, with one city from each nation ultimately chosen as the Culture City of East Asia each year.
Weifang's rich historical and cultural heritage played a pivotal role in securing it the honor, highlighting its significance in promoting international cultural exchanges and cooperation.
To fulfill its role, Weifang has outlined a "Six Priorities" policy, focusing on participating in national cultural promotion projects, boosting inbound tourism, Asian tourism initiatives, cultural tourism events, international exchanges with European cultural cities and ASEAN cultural cities, and the creation of international brands in the Asian region.
This accomplishment not only showcases Weifang's rich culture but also opens up new avenues for enhancing its global cultural influence.
