On July 6, 2024, the “Midsummer Reception | SCIA Open Day: China-US International Arbitration Dialogues” was held at the SCIA Tower in Qianhai, Shenzhen. The event was co-hosted by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA) and the South China International Arbitration Center (HK) (SCIA HK), with special support from the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services (JAMS).
The seminar invited Anselmo Reyes, SC, SCIA Arbitrator, International Judge at Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) and Former Judge of the High Court of the Hong Kong SAR, Gary Benton, Founder and U.S. & International Arbitrator of the California Arbitration (C.Arb), Chairman and Founder of Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center (SVAMC), Director and Executive Committee Member of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, Marcus Quintanilla, an independent arbitrator and mediator, counsel of international commercial dispute in technology, energy and construction sectors and arbitrator at the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association (AAA-ICDR), and Sun Wei, SCIA Arbitrator, Managing Partner of the Zhong Lun Law Firm as well as other international commercial arbitration experts from various jurisdictions including the US, Hong Kong SAR and Chinese mainland attended the event. They discussed and exchanged views on hot legal topics such as the practices and comparison of China and US international commercial arbitration through an online and offline hybrid mode. More than 120 arbitrators, legal counsels, senior barristers, solicitors, and academic scholars from both domestic and overseas participated in the event.
Dr. Liu Xiaochun, President of the SCIA and Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of the SCIA HK, delivered the welcome address.
Anselmo Reyes, SC, SCIA Arbitrator, International Judge at Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) and Former Judge of the High Court of the Hong Kong SAR, gave a keynote speech on “Reflections on Differences between Common Law and Civil Law Approaches on International Commercial Arbitration.”
Gary Benton, Founder and U.S. & International Arbitrator of the California Arbitration (C.Arb), Chairman and Founder of Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center (SVAMC), Director and Executive Committee Member of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, and Huang Guoyong, Director of the International Cooperation and Development Department of the SCIA and Director of the Jiangmen Centre held a discussion on Dialogue I “Arbitration in China and US: Technology Endeavour”. This session was moderated by Mylene Chan, Visiting Faculty of Peking University School of Transactional Law.
Marcus Quintanilla, an independent arbitrator and mediator, counsel of international commercial dispute in technology, energy and construction sectors and arbitrator at the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association (AAA-ICDR), and Sun Wei, SCIA Arbitrator, Managing Partner of the Zhong Lun Law Firm held a discussion on Dialogue II “Arbitration in China and US: Interim Measures.”
