FDI Moot Shenzhen 2022 Concludes

After rounds of competition, the FDI Moot Shenzhen 2022, hosted by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA), concluded on Aug 14 2022.

A total of 42 teams from the Chinese mainland, the Hong Kong SAR and the Macao SAR, comprising over 300 participants, along with more than 260 expert arbitrators from 46 countries and regions around the world, gathered virtually to compete in the arena of international investment arbitration.

After fierce competition, the 1st to 8th teams will advance to the FDI Moot 2022 Global Competition in London, UK. The teams ranked 9th-16th will enter the FDI Moot 2022 Asia-Pacific Finals in Seoul, South Korea, and compete against teams from other countries in the Asia-Pacific region for the chance to win the Global Finals.

About 15,000 spectators enjoyed the live finals, and the closing ceremony was broadcast online.

Ji Yoon Park from the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB) delivered a special address, representing the organizer of the FDI Moot Asia-Pacific Finals. She stated that with the increasing international investment, international investment arbitration has become one of the most important fields of international law, which is why this event has garnered widespread attention and support from all sectors. FDI Moot Shenzhen provides a wonderful platform for young legal talents to exchange ideas, enhance their research, practice, and comprehensive abilities, and cultivate more international legal talents, she added.

In his speech, Paul Lam Ting-kwok SC, Secretary for Justice of the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong SAR , representing the supporting organization from the Hong Kong SAR, stated that with the strong support of the country, the Hong Kong SAR is continuously integrating into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), jointly building an Asia-Pacific center for international legal and dispute resolution services. Over the years, businesses, legal professionals, and professional institutions in the Hong Kong SAR have closely interacted with the SCIA in various ways and actively supported FDI Moot Shenzhen, he noted.

He also hopes that legal professionals from Shenzhen and the Hong Kong SAR will work closely together to build an international legal and dispute resolution service hub in the GBA.

Jern-Fei Ng QC, from Temple Chambers, representing the judging panel, delivered a speech. He praised the contestants for their thorough preparation, fluent expression, and adept responses, which impressed everyone. This indicates that the young legal talents in China will shine in cross-border dispute resolution. He commended the SCIA for its extraordinary organizational capabilities and congratulated all the contestants on their outstanding achievements.

Cao Saixian, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, delivered a speech to represent the supporting organization from the Chinese mainland. She expressed her delight at seeing the event hosted by Shenzhen, receiving strong support from international organizations, professional institutions, and industry insiders worldwide. As a global, inclusive, and dynamic young city, Shenzhen attaches great importance to exchanges and cooperation with other cities worldwide. Facing the world, facing the youth, and facing the future, FDI Moot Shenzhen helps to enhance her city's internationalization.

Against the backdrop of building the GBA, talented individuals from the Hong Kong SAR and the Macao SAR, and around the world are welcomed to Shenzhen to share development opportunities, she said.

Cao Saixian and Dr. Liu Xiaochun, president of the SCIA, along with representatives from co-organizing law firms, presented awards to the winning teams and individuals.

Prof. Peter Malanczuk, council member of the SCIA and former Dean of the School of Law at City University of Hong Kong, delivered the closing remarks. He expressed his delight in seeing 42 teams from the GBA, with over 300 people actively participating in this event. Special thanks were extended to the 31 domestic and international supporting institutions, 14 co-organizing law firms, and 12 academic support institutions for their strong support for this event.

He said the SCIA will continue to actively participate in the formulation of international commercial legal rules and promote the voice of China in international arbitration with the support of FDI Moot Shenzhen.
