The braised Haimen goat meat from Haimen district in Nantong, Jiangsu province, recently won the Best Exhibit Award at the 21st China International Agricultural Trade Fair, which was held in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.
Haimen white goats, also known as "small-eared goats", have a breeding history of over 1,000 years in the Yangtze River Delta region. They are a local breed of goat known for their excellent skin, wool, and meat, and have become one of the nationally recognized "four famous goat species".
Their meat is tender, with an even distribution of fat. When well-cooked, it is fresh, tender, and delicious, rich but not greasy, making it a popular winter delicacy.
Authentic Haimen goat meat is not only delicious but is also nourishing and helps to warm both the body and soul. In addition to braising, it can also be made into soup or served cold.
Currently, there are over 800 sheep farms in Haimen, with an annual breeding volume of 1 million sheep. The annual output value of the goat industry in the district is estimated to exceed 1.2 billion yuan ($164.41 million).
