In downtown Nantong, Jiangsu province, an expanding array of sightseeing spots and cultural amenities have become increasingly accessible.
Here is the top recommended route for a one-day trip: Xisi Temple – Yixiao Lane – Nantong Museum – Haoyang Villa – Huanxi Cultural Square
The Xisi Temple Buddhist Cultural Exhibition Hall was renovated and built around the Xinghua Temple established in 1165. Xisi Temple is a rare ancient architectural complex in Nantong, containing remnants from the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
At Xisi Temple, you can not only appreciate architectural history and browse cultural relics such as statues and inscriptions but also participate in seasonal activities such as tea ceremonies, incense ceremonies, and rubbings while enjoying the quaint courtyard and basking in the winter sunshine.
Yixiao Lane is home to coffee shops, jewelry stores, trendy clothing stores, and a skewer shop that has been operating in an old house for decades. On the nearby Qiuxiu Road, both the old charm of Nantong and modern artsy vibes can be enjoyed within the space of a few dozen meters.
Located on the picturesque banks of the Haohe River, the Nantong Museum is China's first public museum. Stepping into the museum now, you will be greeted by a vibrant autumn scene, where time-worn architecture harmonizes beautifully with contemporary Chinese-style structures.
Coming out of the north gate of the Nantong Museum and strolling along the Haohe River will take you to Haoyang Villa. This is a traditional Chinese-style courtyard featuring a front and rear hall typical of traditional Chinese architecture. It consists of a two-story building and multiple small courtyards, with green tiles and white walls, resembling a beautiful ink painting.
