The Xiangsha taro from Jingjiang, a county-level city in Taizhou, Jiangsu, has been selected as an excellent agricultural germplasm resource in China, the only taro to be selected, according to a survey report released recently by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
In an effort to foster the protection and utilization of excellent agricultural germplasm resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has been collecting and publicizing these excellent resources every year since 2019, which has significantly boosted societal awareness and sense of responsibility in safeguarding and harnessing these valuable assets.
The Jingjiang Xiangsha taro was selected for its high quality, rich nutrients such as starch, cellulose and protein, and its long history of cultivation.
The Xiangsha taro, a traditional specialty of Jingjiang, is renowned for its distinctive chestnut-like flavor. For centuries, it has been a treasured gift from Jingjiang farmers and is also the city's first national geographical indication agricultural product.
