The construction of the Hefei Advanced Light Source (HALS), a fourth-generation light source, in Hefei, capital of East China's Anhui province, will be completed in 2027.

Feng Donglai, director of the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), spoke about the progress of building the HALS at the 5th Anhui University Innovative Development Forum on Dec 5.

HALS is the world's most advanced and Asia's only fourth-generation low-energy realm synchrotron radiation light source, said Feng.

It is developed based on the second-generation light source – the Hefei Light Source owned by NSRL, which is located at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei.

Compared with previous generations, the fourth-generation light source will allow users to see the micro-cosmos with greater clarity, according to Feng.

After its completion, HALS is expected to be used by many international parties, help tackle industry bottlenecks and provide a boost to local innovation-driven development.
