The opening ceremony of the China National Chemical Engineering Co Ltd Environmental Protection Research Institute, also known as the Hefei R&D Center of China Chemical Technology Research Institute (a subsidiary of CNCEC), was held on June 20.

The new institute is located within East China Engineering Science and Technology Co Ltd, a subsidiary of CNCEC and a listed company in the Hefei National High-tech Industry Development Zone (Hefei high-tech zone) in Hefei, capital of East China's Anhui province.

The institute will conduct research in areas including industrial wastewater treatment, comprehensive management of water environment basins, solid waste disposal and utilization, soil remediation and new materials. It will also cooperate with universities and research institutes to solve technical bottlenecks in these areas and apply sci-tech achievements.

Yu Shuhong, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, said at the opening ceremony that he believes both sides will find more cooperation opportunities and strive to achieve breakthroughs in environmental protection and new materials R&D.

Luo Hong, deputy director of Anhui's Department of Ecology and Environment, said the institute is expected to play an active role in the development of environmental protection industry in the province as well as in the building of an international environmental protection industrial park in the Hefei high-tech zone. He added that the establishment of the institute in Hefei reflects the CNCEC's foresight of playing a leading role in the market.

Fang Xiangmin, deputy director of the Hefei high-tech zone, said the local government has been supporting the development of innovative research institutes and will provide a sound business environment for them to expand.
