Zhanjiang Airport is scheduled to add more flights to Hainan province to assist in the city's exchanges and communications with the Hainan Free Trade Port. The number of passenger flights per week from Zhanjiang to Haikou and Sanya in Hainan will increase from 38 to 54.

Zhanjiang has been promoting in-depth cooperation with Hainan in the fields of transportation, industries, opening up, and public services.

In June, the city launched six measures to serve the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port and boost the development of the Qiongzhou Strait Economic Belt, which involve promoting the opening of Nanshan Port in Xuwen county, establishing a safety supervision system for ro-ro passenger ships, cracking down on illegal maritime transportation, as well as building rapid marine transit to shorten the traffic time between the two sides of the Qiongzhou Strait.
