The main pylon of the Zhanjiang Tongming Sea Mega Bridge was topped off on Nov 6, marking 70 percent completion of the project.

Spanning 5,755 meters, the Tongming Sea Mega Bridge will be the longest cross-sea bridge in Zhanjiang upon its opening by the end of 2019. It forms a key part of the Donghai Island-Leizhou Highway, which links Donghai Island with Leizhou Peninsula and the Fenyong New and High-Tech Development Zone.

Featuring a dual four-lane structure (with six lanes on the bridge), the highway has a total length of 47.03 kilometers and a max speed of 100 kilometers per hour on its 35.83-kilometer arteries. Construction began in October 2016.

More than 1,000 workers work in three shifts to make sure the project is completed on schedule despite typhoons and the rainy season.

After becoming operational in 2020, the highway will cut the current 80-minute drive time between Donghai Island and Leizhou down to less than half an hour.
