A young farmer from Zhanjiang has become one of a group of agricultural entrepreneurs forging a new path in the industry through innovation, sustainability, and increased efficiency.

Wang Jiawen, a daughter of a farming dynasty in Zhanjiang, is hoping to create western Guangdong's first beef brand.

Instead of submitting resumes after graduating from Guangdong Pei Zheng College, the 22-year-old established Chaokaixin (Super Happy) Agricultural Development Co in Lianjiang, a project focused on breeding beef cattle as well as growing other crops.

"The heat and moisture conditions are good in Lianjiang," says Wang. "It's suitable for pasture growing and beef tastes good too."

From the get go, Wang introduced new sustainable methods to increase efficiency, such as using her cattle dung as a base for the fertilizer used to grow her crops.

Keeping abreast with modern market place, Wang's beef products are predominantly sold via e-commerce channels, with much of its offal sold to local hot pot restaurants.

On the innovation front, Wang has launched a farm-based tourism project offering scenic views, local delicacies, and a chance to see what life is like on the farm.

Patches of deserted farms have been put back into business thanks to the investment of Chaokaixin, employing local farmers and increasing social welfare in the area.

Some 200 farmers so far have benefited from Chaokaixin's growth, helping to contribute 5 million yuan ($728,120) in annual average sales volume.

Wang is passionate about what she produces and has invested in the entire industrial chain. "We are able to track what we produce from the field to the table," says Wang. "And if we can develop into the beef brand of the Pearl River Delta region, we will be able to invest from the table back into the field."
