The development of the low-carbon energy industry in Zhanjiang's Xuwen county looks set to ramp up in the upcoming few years, according to county officials.

The officials voiced this view based on an agreement signed between Xuwen Ecological Industrial Cluster and Beijing-headquartered Huixinhengxin Energy Science and Technology on Jan 3.

According to the agreement, Huixinhengxin will invest 200 million yuan ($30.44 million) to build steam power facilities in the area.

Covering 33,333 square meters, the facilities will include steam boilers with a combined capacity of 100 metric tons and a distributed generator system (genset) capable of generating 6,000 kWh.

Compared with traditional methods of power generation, the new facility will be more environmentally friendly and reduce carbon dioxide output by 600,000 tons per year.

Construction is expected to begin on May 1 and will produce 200 million yuan in output and 20 million yuan in tax annually.

The Xuwen Ecological Industrial Cluster was built in 2014 and is dedicated to new industries, electronic technologies and low-carbon projects, among others. Until now, the cluster has introduced a dozen projects valued at hundreds of millions of yuan, from bio-fertilizer, agricultural processing products to biological medicine.

County officials said the new steam power supply project will help to further develop Xuwen's economy.
