Zhang Wei, provincial-level inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) item Pucheng paper-cutting, created paper-cutting artwork to celebrate the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which is scheduled to open in Beijing on Oct 16.

The paper-cutting work depicts a happy atmosphere during the harvest, with the younger generation working hard, the older generation taking a break, and kids running around the yard.

"Pucheng paper-cutting is a national ICH item, and as an inheritor, I would like to show the changes and improvements in my hometown through the works, in order to express my best wishes for the prosperity and security of the motherland," Zhang said.

Pucheng paper-cutting has the characteristics of integrating pictures and words together, and the pictures must contain auspicious meanings, to express the praise and expectations of nature, life, and other beautiful stuff.

The art of paper-cutting was introduced to Pucheng during the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316), and has formed its unique style throughout thousands of years of development. Pucheng, a county in Nanping, Fujian province, was named by the Ministry of Culture as the hometown of Chinese folk culture and art (paper-cutting) in 2008. Pucheng paper-cutting was listed as a national ICH item in 2014.
