Tracing its origins to the Department of Pediatrics of Shanghai Medical College in 1956, the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is a comprehensive 3A hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and research. It has China's first approved master's degree program and doctoral degree program in pediatrics, postdoctoral research station and key pediatrics discipline. Besides, it is a key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, and a national-level demonstration base on international science and technology cooperation. With 3 municipal key laboratories and the Municipal Stem Cell Therapy Engineering Center, it ranks the third among all children's hospitals in the National Hospital Ranking.

The hospital now has Yuzhong Branch and Liangjiang Branch, with a total of 2,480 registered beds.

The hospital receives 2.9 million outpatients and emergency patients, and about 80,000 inpatients annually, and the proportion of foreign patients is nearly 40 percent. The hospital is a cardiovascular emergency training center authorized by the American Heart Association (AHA), a national networked child emergency center, a national demonstration base on early childhood development, the first approved "demonstration base on birth defect intervention", a congenital heart disease intervention training base designated by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, a national stem cell clinical research agency and the only children's hospital in the country that can perform liver transplant.

The Pediatrics Academy is the largest pediatric physician training base in the country, a national-level pediatric continuing education base and a standardized training base for resident doctors.

The Pediatric Research Institute is an important base for hospital research and a key laboratory on development and diseases of the Ministry of Education. The number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China has ranked first in the national pediatric circle for 10 consecutive years.

The Western Pediatric Development Union established by the hospital, with 132 members, serves people in 10 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in the west. The Chongqing Pediatric Development Union which is led by it, shares high-quality medical resources among 61 pediatric medical units in 39 districts and counties, making positive contributions to the Chinese undertaking of pediatrics.
