Chongqing General Hospital is one of the first approved comprehensive 3A hospitals in Chongqing. In August 2014, with the approval of the Chongqing Municipal Government, the former Chongqing Third People's Hospital and Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital were merged into Chongqing General Hospital. In June 2018, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chongqing Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission signed an agreement, according to which, the Chongqing General Hospital was listed as the "Chongqing Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences" and became a subsidiary hospital directly under the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. 

The hospital is the first municipal foreign-related hospital, municipal cadre care hospital, teaching hospital of Chongqing Medical University, teaching hospital of Sichuan Medical University, municipal designated hospital for the treatment of traffic accidents, municipal basic medical insurance designated hospital, and municipal industrial injury medical insurance designated hospital. 

The hospital now has Sanyuan Branch, Zhongshan Branch and Jiangbei Branch, and a new branch in the north of Zhaomu Mountain in Liang Jiang New Area is under construction and is expected to be put into use in 2019. 

The hospital has Chongqing Cardiopulmonary and Vascular Disease Research Center, Chongqing Senile Disease Prevention and Treatment Research Institute, Chongqing Bone Injury and Disease Center, Chongqing Clinical Laboratory Center, and Chongqing Otolaryngology Hospital. In 2016, it was approved to set up a post-doctoral research station, and introduced academician Han Demin, an academic leader in the otolaryngology head and neck surgery. It has the municipal key medical laboratory-kidney disease dialysis treatment research laboratory, clinical quality control research laboratory, and the only tuberculosis gene diagnosis laboratory in Chongqing. The Rehabilitation Medicine is a municipal medical specialty. According to the multidisciplinary collaborative treatment model, the hospital has three major medical centers: Heart center, orthopedic center, respiratory center.

The hospital has a group of experts receiving special government allowance from the State Council, experts with outstanding contributions to Chongqing, municipal academic leaders, and part-time master tutors, and has mastered a number of leading clinical technologies. 

Chongqing General Hospital adheres to public welfare and puts public health first. In the next 5 to 10 years, the hospital will be built into the medical center at the upper reaches of Yangtze River, which has discipline advantages, well-arranged talents, first-class technical equipment, comprehensive and efficient management, and a harmonious human environment, and integrates medical treatment, teaching and scientific research.
