Located in Gaotanyan, Shapingba District, Chongqing, Southwest Hospital has a long history and glorious tradition. Formerly known as the Central Hospital of Nanjing National Government, it was established in Nanjing in 1929 and then it was moved to Chongqing in 1941. It was officially named the First Hospital Affiliated to AMU and the Southwest Clinical Medical College in 1950. After more than 80 years of development, it has become a large-scale comprehensive 3A hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and research. The hospital covers an area of more than 300 acres, with a series of high-precision medical equipment such as Leonardo Da Vinci surgical robot, PET / CT, 3.0MRI.

It has formed advantages in eight clinical fields, including wounds, burns, digestive diseases (liver disease), cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, infectious diseases, urinary diseases, eye diseases, comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of tumors, and rehabilitation and plastic surgery. It has cultivated 8 clinical specialities, such as breast, joint, rheumatism, fundus disease, prostate disease, pain treatment, psychotherapy, and prenatal and postnatal care; It has mastered five core clinical technologies including major organ transplantation (heart, liver, kidney, multi-organ combination), a full range of minimally invasive surgeries (laparoscopic, interventional, endoscopic, radiofrequency), treatment for the critically ill, tissue-engineered repair, genetic diagnosis and treatment, etc. 

The hospital has won three first prizes and 16 second prizes of the National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, and 35 first prizes and 146 second prizes of the Military (provincial and ministerial level) Prize for Progress in Science and Technology (medical achievements). It has undertaken more than 1,200 projects above the provincial and ministerial level, including more than 62 projects of the 973 and 863 programs, and has received research funding of 580 million yuan. More than 900 papers have been published in foreign SCI journals. In 2013, it obtained the most patents in the country.
