The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was established in 1957. After more than 60 years of development, it has become one of the first approved "3A hospitals" in China, and a key comprehensive teaching hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, prevention, health care and foreign-related medical care.

The hospital led the establishment of the first hospital group (medical association) in Chongqing, namely the "Hospital Group of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University". Centered on the hospital headquarters, the group includes three directly affiliated departments and units (the first branch, Jinshan Hospital, and Qinggang Senior Care Center), 15 intracity entrusted hospitals, and five out-city counterpart hospitals (Tibet Chamdo People's Hospital, Xinjiang Shihezi People's Hospital, Shaanxi Weinan People's Hospital, Shaanxi Fuping County People's Hospital, People's Hospital of Wanning of Hainan Province).

The hospital has 36 clinical departments, eight medical technology departments, and 3,200 registered beds. The patients are from all over the country including the United States, Australia, and Japan, etc. There are 24 teaching hospitals and 77 guiding hospitals in Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou and other surrounding provinces and cities.

The headquarters is the primary unit and expert group unit for the treatment of severe cases of major infectious diseases such as SARS and type A H1N1 flu in Chongqing, and the only local hospital in Chongqing that has obtained access to liver and kidney transplantation technology. It has mastered superior technologies such as organ transplantation, minimally invasive, intervention, painless diagnosis and treatment, and promoted a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment model based on disease.

It has 17 national key clinical specialty construction projects approved by the National Health Commission, ranking 12th in the country. It has one "key specialty of senile diseases" approved by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 14 training bases approved by the Ministry of Health, 27 municipal clinical clinics, 20 municipal medical quality control centers, and 10 municipal training bases for professional nurses. All disciplines have their own unique advantages, and the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment is domestically leading.

The hospital has successively won the "National Top 100 Hospitals", "National Advanced Medical Unit", "National Advanced Hospital in Culture Construction", "National Advanced Medical Unit in Ideological and Political Education", "2005-2007 Advanced Hospital in Management (awarded by National Health Commission)", Gold Award of "Job Skills Competition for Nurses", "2017 Model Hospital in Improving Medical Service (awarded by National Health Commission)", "Model Hospital in Quality Service (awarded by National Health Commission)" and other honorary titles.
