Tenth Chinese medical team to continue providing medical services in PNG

Updated: 2019-08-05

Ten members from the tenth Chinese medical team departed from Chongqing to Papua New Guinea on Aug 5, where they will be providing medical services in Port Moresby General Hospital for a year.

Chongqing has provided free medical aid to PNG since 2002 when the city entrusted by the National Health Commission, sent the first medical team to PNG, which was also the first Chinese medical team sent to the South Pacific region.

By July 2019, Chongqing had sent nine medical teams with a total of 90 specialists to PNG.

In the past 17 years, medical team members have implemented a number of "new" technologies in hospitals, and trained a group of medical staff.

"All the 10 members are the clinical backbone of Chongqing's 3A hospitals, with an average age of 38," an official from the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission said, adding that the medical team was jointly built by seven renowned Chongqing hospitals.

The tenth medical team will begin the second round of the three-year counterpart assistance project, so as to implement minimally invasive techniques not only in urology, but also in general surgery and gynecology. Their final aim is to build the only fully completed minimally invasive surgery treatment center in the South Pacific region. In addition, the preparatory work for the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University -- Port Moresby General Hospital Telemedicine Project will be carried out.
