Zhuhai parks, villages ideal for May Day holiday travels

Updated: 2023-04-27

Picturesque scenery and charming villages in Zhuhai await visitors who want to avoid the crowds during the five-day May Day holiday (April 29 to May 3) as domestic hotel and air ticket orders have both surged and surpassed the volumes seen during the same time period in 2019 before the pandemic.

The ancient Huitong Village in Jinding Town has long been reputed as the "most beautiful village in Zhuhai." The village's northern, eastern, and southern sides are flanked by Mt Fenghuang (Phoenix Mountain) and it was rebuilt during the reigns of Qing Emperors Tongzhi (1862-1874) and Guangxu (1874-1908), resulting in the current layout of three arterial streets and eight major lanes.

Visitors will encounter ancient architecture in the form of gates, watchtowers, and ancestral halls, as well as modern cafes and homestays while wandering around.

Elsewhere in Jinwan District, Mutouchong Village in Sanzao Town is famous for its stone houses that have withstood decades of wind and rain. Nostalgic murals have been painted on many of their walls.

In recent years, the village has been further exploring its unique cultural and natural landscapes in terms of overall renovation. A 645-meter (705-yard) elevated walkway has been built, bringing people closer to the mountains and flowers.

Stone-house homestays, sightseeing, camping, and picking fresh fruits and vegetables can all be experienced in this quaint and quiet village.

Located at the Zhuhai International Air Show Center in Jinwan, Zhuhai Aerospace Land has fast gained popularity online since it opened on Jan 20. With a total exhibition area of 40,000 square meters (1,581 square yards), it includes eight different areas, showcasing the latest developments and benchmarking products in China's aerospace, aviation, and national defense industries.

A giant LED screen is set up at the entrance, presenting China's aerospace products with glasses-free 3D effects.

A life-size replica of China's orbiting Tiangong space station that is on display at Zhuhai Aerospace Land allows visitors to walk inside and get a closer look at how taikonauts live, work, and sleep inside the station.

The exhibition area devoted to the theme of national defense has the highest level of interactivity among all eight areas, as visitors can experience a simulated land, sea, and air battle.

The architectural complex of Luyi Ancestral Hall in Doumen's Nanmen village has an oyster-shell wall with a history of nearly 600 years. Comprised of millions of neatly arranged oyster shells, this wall is one of the oldest and best-preserved of its kind in China.

The 11.2-kilometer (7-mile) Xiangshan Cloud Walkway connects several landmarks in Xiangzhou District such as Xiangshan Lake Park, Xiangshan Rest Station, Shixi Park, Dajing Mt Community Park, as well as Sea & Sky (Haitian) Park. It serves as a multi-functional urban park for the public to relax in, while also offering cultural tourism and "smart" experiences.

Guanli Rural Tourism Ecological Park in Doumen's Xinxiang Village has two key sectors - homestays and farmland – to give visitors a fresh taste of rural life. Of note, the park has planted 80 mu (13 acres) of lychees and longans.
